Golf Galaxy to open Sugar Land store

Golf Galaxy is planning to open its second location in the Houston area on Nov. 14.

The 15,154-square-foot Sugar Land Golf Galaxy Store, located at 2745-C Town Center Boulevard, will offer a collection of golf equipment, apparel and accessories for all skill levels, including brands such as Callaway Golf, TaylorMade, Titleist and Nike Golf.

The store’s hands-on attractions will include an electronic golf simulator that allows players to try their equipment before purchasing, an indoor driving bay, hi-tech Ball Launch Monitor technology for advanced club fitting and a PGA instruction area complete with computer video swing analysis.

Sugar Land church to house Fort Bend's newest Starbucks

The Sugar Creek Baptist Church in Sugar Land is opening a new Starbucks with a unique twist.

The coffee shop, part of the church's new Family Center, will be located inside -- next to the worship area and adjacent to a large, two-story play center. Patrons can sip lattes and surf the web with free Wi-Fi while their children shoot down slides and tumble through the padded obstacle course. A bookstore will provide Christian reading materials, gifts, apparel, movies and music.

"It's a nice place, everything's new. You hang out with your neighbors. You hang out with your neighbor's kids." But as correspondent Peter Van Sant reports, that sweet life was shattered on the night of Dec. 10, 2003, when Kevin and his family were gunned down in their home. Marshall Slot was the lead detective assigned to the case. "It looks as if it’s a burglary gone wrong. You know, family coming home from dinner. It's plausible that they could have surprised a burglar," Slot says. But as Slot combed through the Whitaker home, he realized things weren’t adding up. "In the master bedroom the dressers all had drawers open on them, but they were all open equal distance. It was very neat and orderly," Slot explains.

Sugar land police operation results in 11 DWI arrests

The Sugar Land Police Department charged 11 drivers with driving while intoxicated during a recent 10-day enforcement operation.

The initiative resulted in 47 additional arrests on other charges.

The Texas Department of Transportation funded the Selective Traffic Enforcement Program from June 27 through July 6 with a $10,700 grant to address DWI enforcement.

Sugar Land man turns scrap metal to art

Adams, 59, is a scrap metal artist.

His work is on display at the Rosenberg Railroad Museum, 1921 Ave. F. in an exhibit titled "Iron and Steel."

“My mission is to find aspects of beauty or meaning in what is considered ‘scrap,’ ” Adams said, “and give it a second life as art.”

Originally from Missouri, Adams worked for several years in the information technology industry. In 2005 he became inspired to do something else.

His inspiration came in the form a 1950s pickup truck he was taking apart.

“I had this piece of scrap metal from the axle,” Adams said. “I was taking it apart and looked at these little round things that looked kind of like ears. I had ears in my hand. I looked at the rest of this thing and I realized it was going to be a dog. There was a rubber bumper pad which became its nose. I mean, the dog was there. I just released him.”

Sugar Land bust nets $1 M in cocaine

Tarsila Villarreal and San Juanita Garcia, were taken into custody and charged with felony drug possession.
SUGAR LAND, Texas—Authorities in Fort Bend County have seized 52 pounds of cocaine valued at more than $1 million.

The 22 bundles of cocaine, agents say, were hidden in a specially manufactured compartment of the vehicle which was parked at a Joe’s Crab Shack in Sugar Land.
